Catherine loses her job and is in dire financial straits. She wants to hold on to her lovely apartment, but can't afford the rent. Richard--who is being kicked out of his apartment because his piano-playing is disturbing the other tenants--applies to sublet the apartment and, upon learning of Catherine's circumstances offers to share the apartment. He also is definitely attracted; Catherine is not--but she agrees. Richard and his piano move in. In short order, his plodding piano-playing gets on her nerves and she suggests that he find a teacher. He in the meantime has met Frank at a concert and learned that he teaches piano to a select group of students. At Catherine's urging, Richard arranges to take lessons from Frank at his home studio. Under Frank's tutelage, Richard begins to blossom as a musician, particularly when playing fourhand pieces with Frank. Through Richard, Frank and Catherine meet and are immediately attracted. A routine evolves in which Frank comes regularly to the apartment to teach Richard, after which the three share good food and wine and enjoy one another's company. Richard realizes that Frank and Catherine have begun an affair, but doesn't want to give up his budding friendship with Frank or their musical camaraderie. And he doesn't want to spoil the living arrangement with Catherine. So he says nothing and pours his misery into his piano-playing. In the end Catherine has to choose between the two.
