The first Gundam movie (1981) consists of recut footage from the first 15 episodes of the watershed TV series Mobile Suit Gundam (1979). In the year 0079 of Yoshiyuki Tomino's "Universal Century," war rages between the Earth Federation and the space-based Principality of Zeon. Unlike the dedicated pilots of later mecha adventures, Amuro Ray becomes a hero in spite of himself. When Zeon raiders devastate his home, the orbiting space colony Side 7, Amuro stumbles into the cockpit of the Federation's secret weapon, the Gundam Mobile Suit RX-78. His talent as a pilot brings him into conflict with the dashing, unscrupulous Zeon ace Char Aznable. Amuro finds his resolve tested as he interacts with the other characters, who have also been pressed into service.
